We are off to Uganda!

On Saturday morning, February 11 we fly, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Entebbe, Uganda, arriving on Sunday shortly after noon.

The Katakwi and Amuria Districts of Eastern Uganda have been subject to many hardships over the years – cattle raids from the Karamajong area, Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency, a large proportion of the population living in Internally Displaced Person’s camps, severe flooding at certain times, followed by erratic and poor rainfall at other times. World Renew has been doing development work in Uganda for many years, working with local partners to improve food security and income through conservation farming and crop diversification as well as establishing village savings and loan associations to encourage small businesses.  Unfortunately, much of the progress that has been made in recent years has been negated by the effects of the 2016 La Niña event which has resulted in reduced crop and livestock production. Resurgence of crop and livestock pests and diseases have also contributed to a reduction in production.  The people depend on their crops and vegetation to feed not only their livestock but also to feed themselves. An estimated 10.9 million people in Uganda are now experiencing acute food insecurity.  To address the acute food insecurity needs we hope to initiate a project to provide food assistance for a number of months.  The initiative we will be involved with will focus on some of the most severely impacted areas of the Eastern Region of Uganda.

On Monday, we will have an opportunity to meet with World Renew Development staff in Kampala for an orientation to the country and the work that is in progress.  Then on Tuesday we will make the 7-hour drive to Soroti.  Soroti will be our home during our time in Uganda.  From there we will visit the various communities and meet with World Renew’s partners for that area as well as government officials.  We hope to develop a proposal that will be approved by both CFGB and Global Affairs Canada and then start the implementation process.

Annie will return to Canada early in March and Harry will return at the end of March.  We are excited about the plans to turn this project over to a local person who will oversee and complete the project.

We would appreciate your prayer for safety, good health and wisdom to design a proposal which will be the most beneficial for the affected farmers in the area.

Stay tuned for more details and photos in the coming weeks!

You can do it. It’s a tight time frame but I’m sure you will approach the issues with logic and efficiency and encouraging support, just like you have in the past.
Peace to you both during your travels.
Best wishes from Fran and John.

You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers as you venture into, what for you is, another “unknown”. May you be welcomed with open arms as you again formulate a plan of action to help those suffering in Uganda. Your past IRM missions will help to do this in a timely manner, I’m sure. Just checking for a second entry and praying for you daily. So hard to imagine what you are going through. But I’m sure you are already making a difference in a place of drought and suffering. Saw that Jim B. away on Wed. (Sure you must know and trust that Margaret will sense your love and comfort). All is well here. Talk to you Annie as soon as you get back–before we leave on the 7th. Love you so much for who you are and what you do, R&D
